There are probably many reasons why one write songs or books or other forms of creative meanderings. Today as I watch some guy cross the street as slowly as possible, cell phone to his ear, me knowing with high probability what the next twenty years of his life were going to be like I was tempted to start categorizing people. Then I realized that:

1. That is a negative practice, and,

2. It’s been done a thousand times, far better than I could do it.

So that led me to this thought. The songs I write, love ‘em or hate ‘em, are unique expressions of my views on the world. There are millions of songs out there, the same notes, mere acoustic vibrations, but each imbued with something unique to the creator thereof.

So that is why I write more songs than blogs, tweets, even stories. They come form some creative channel in me, perhaps originating in my brain or some cosmic locale outside our galaxy, or maybe outside our realty spectrum! Whatever, they eventually find their way through me and out my hands and mouth.

Vibrations.

Hey, I co-wrote a book with that same title. Mere coincidence?

Who cares : ) ?

Bottom line of this tiny blog is that song writers write because it is a rare opportunity to distinguish one’s perceptions from all others, even though they all share a common tether in space-time. So perhaps it is the ILLUSION of unique creative effort that is so fulfilling and personally important.

It does not matter. I’ll keep writing and I hope at least someone out there is listening and finds a moment’s enjoyment of my creative output.

Peace

E

I have a brief, but memorable, moment of euphoria today. I can’t say exactly what motivated it but it was related to the fact that I spent 9 hours in the studio today working with a band called The Chess Club.

I really like these guys. Ages ranging from 16 to maybe 20 or so.

I’m 54.

They were focused, positive, and very intellectual about their musical decisions, but then gave heartfelt performances and smiles all around.

IDK, maybe it is my age., or maybe it’s just fun to be around people with a an unusually low ego/talent ratio.

And then to ice the cake, some beautiful girl drops in and reveals that her physical beauty is matched by her singing prowess. It was awesome.

Anyway, here I sit contemplating my 54 years, where I’ve been and where I might be headed.

I have no f—ing idea about the later, and have forgotten much of the former.

Maybe that is the source of euphoria! I am at the magic middle age of perfect nothingness.

Or maybe it’s this beer I am nursing at the moment.

Whatever. I am diggin’ it!

Peace

So Sarah Palin says it is ok to smoke pot in your house – cool. I’m no tea party advocate (because I actually have an IQ) but I do agree that there are a lot more important things to regulate than weed.

And as a matter of fact, who the F… does this US government think it is to be regulating lifestyles and pandering to rich bastards with 60M golden parachutes when there are more important things to worry about like religious zealots with lots of ammunition (oh wait, that’s arizona and utah) and oil leakage that will NOT end up in our gas tanks (oh wait, that’s not green anyway).

Clearly I am the confused one here so I am signing off and working on MUSIC – the key to saving the human race (assuming saving it is a good thing : )

Peace and dog biscuits

OK – been a LOOOONNNNGGG while since I updated the blog – the reason is that most of my blogs are at http://www.erichenderson.com/wordpress/ so I have not been dong my duty here on the bumblefunk site – sorry!

Anyway – been doing a lot of fun stuff.

1. Working with my favorite engineer and music partner, Chad Jacobsen, to record the next Keno album for Griffle Records – a killer up and coming indie label. Check out www.griffle.com.

2. Working on a LOT of Henderson tunes – really – I am getting it done but it is slow since I am the whole show and anyone who records their own music knows that being the performer engineer producer promotor – bla bla bla – takes a bit of time.

What else…

Well we are working closely with Hello Holdings (the parent of Griffle) to develop all kinds of music and audio projects- and also video!

Yup – want a pro video shoot of your performance – contact info@griffle.com and make the appointment- you will not be disappointed!

Well that is all for today – gotta go make a buck!

Love and Peace

Eric

PS Check out The Pop ca 1979 – that is my famous brother Tim on bass - they rocked hard!!

I decided today that I am putting a new category in my music sales locations: “Steal This Track”

Anyone old enough might remember Abbie Hoffman’s book,”Steal This Book”. Abby was an antiestablishment revolutionary who wanted to kick capitalism in the corn nuts. Well, it turns out that unless you are signed to a major label with a million dollar + sales and marketing budget, you need to figure out some smart ways to sell your music and make a living doing it. If you put your music up on Amazon.mp3 and iTunes (either directly or through a service like Tunecore, CD Baby and others) all you are really doing is adding noise to the already grossly overstuffed library of music at those locations. And you are still competing with Beyonce (or whatever she calls herself these days) and a bunch of other BRANDS that used to be musicians. This is an impossible task and you will have to spend a lot of money to make any money.

But..

If you give your music away and work your ass off to become a YouTube phenom, get a lot of happy fans to market your music for you – go “viral” (I prefer exponential) than you might actually have a shot at making a nice six or more figure per annum. How?

Selling stuff to the people who love your free music!! That’s how!

You have to create a brand for yourself – that is how the majors do it. John Mayer “Mankinis” and Eminem toothpaste – that is our goal as indie musicians!

Usually try not to put trivial mindless banalities up on my blogs but in this case I think I will violate my credo. I try to help people and over the years I have helped a few folks get their music onto CDs and get the CDs pressed and out the door. All out of pocket. Right now I am at least $7000 in red on this one endeavor alone (there are others). The deal is that I love music, and people and want kids to succeed.

But the problem with today’s entitled society is that these people feel no compulsion to pay me back. In fact, recently a feud broke out between one of my clients (for whom I provided gear for his own studio) and another rapper with whom I had worked in the past. So the upshot is that I get dissed on MySpace by this rapper who, for reasons I cannot understand, feels that nothing is his responsibility and it is all everyone’s else’s fault (pertaining to whatever issues may be relevant at any one moment).

So here’s the deal, did I fail when I was working with this guy? He is smart and ambitious, but slightly crazy like all of us. I stopped working with him because I am tired of the only subjects in music being “bitches, money and murder”. C’mon, is there nothing positive to say in rap music? Of course there is.

But here we are in a nonsensical and nonproductive feud – yet again.

Sheeesh – get a clue!!
